Trauma Informed Practice
Awareness and Action on its Evolving Benefits in the Post COVID Context

The goal of trauma-informed practice (TIP) is to avoid re-traumatizing individuals and to support safety, choice, and control so they can benefit from services offered and enhance strengths and coping skills. TIP involves awareness of the effects of trauma, how to translate this awareness into one’s practice, as well as organizational commitment. In the post COVID context the need for, and benefits of, trauma informed approaches are increasingly being noted, to promote client/complainant engagement, achieve equity goals, and support worker resilience. This workshop will provide an update on trauma informed approaches as they are being applied in contexts similar to ombudsperson offices, explore how organizational culture and practices matter in the enactment of TIP, and invite reflection and discussion on the implications for participants’ work.

Nancy Poole PhD, LLD(Hon.) has worked with governments and organizations across Canada and internationally toco- lead system change initiatives and co-develop toolkits, training curricula and guidelines on ‘trauma-informed practice’.Dedicated to connecting across distance, cultures, genders and sectors, Nancy is catalyst for bringing knowledge to practice and policy, to make social change.In 2021, Nancy was awarded an honorary doctorate of laws degree from the Justice Institute of BC in recognition of her contributions to women’s health, including trauma-informed practice and the treatment of substance use and addiction. www.linkedin.com/in/nancy-poole-6558886
