About Us

We think differently at Manitoba Ombudsman. We believe every Manitoba citizen deserves to be treated as an individual. Our experience tells us that there is no straight line to helping people. Manitoba Ombudsman’s mandates are among the most expansive in Canada. In additional to our investigative authority, the Office also undertakes audits, monitors compliance, comments on the access and privacy implications of information technology, proposed programs or legislative schemes, or comments on the administration of the Acts. The Office has a unique responsibility to follow-up on inquest recommendations under The Fatality Inquiries Act (FIA).

Our work is different from other positions within the public service as the Ombudsman is an oversight body of the public sector. The Ombudsman responds to citizens concerns about administrative decisions and can investigate individual complaints and systemic issues regarding provincial and municipal governments and their authorities, Crown corporations, tribunals, agencies boards and commissions, non-government institutions prescribed in regulations, and over 20,000 health entities in the public and private sector. The office seeks to resolve complaints as informally as possible. Our investigations have brought about positive change in the public sector benefitting many Manitobans.
